Bee Card and Motu Move
Bee Card
Bee Card is our electronic bus card, and is the best way to pay for public transport in the Horizons Region. It is faster, more convenient and provides cheaper fares than if you pay in cash.
Getting a Bee Card
To get a Bee Card, you can order one online at beecard.co.nz, purchase one on board from the bus driver (cash only), visit the Whanganui or Palmerston North iSite, or visit the Whanganui (181 Guyton St) or Palmerston North (15 Victoria Avenue) Horizons Regional Council offices. You'll then need to register your card on the Bee Card website.
Bee Cards cost $5 to purchase, with a minimum $5 top up upon purchase. You can top up your card any time on the Bee Card website, or by popping into one of the Horizons Regional Council offices listed above.
You can learn more about the Bee Card here, and more about our fares and concessions here.
Using your Bee Card
To get the best value for your bus fare, be sure to register your Bee Card at beecard.co.nz. If your Bee Card is not registered to an account, you will be charged the full adult fare for your trip.
Simply tag on your card to the card reader by the door as you board the bus.
Tag-off your card on the card reader as you exit the bus.
If you do not tag off your bee card, you will be charged the full adult fare for the bus.

No. We are unable to provide refunds. Please consider this when topping up your Bee Card.

Your Bee Card balance will sit in a pending state until your card's next bus tag-on.
Motu Move
The Bee Card scheme will end in the Horizons Region when we switch to Motu Move.
Motu Move is the name of the National Ticketing Solution (NTS), a partnership between NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) and 13 Public Transport Authorities (PTAs) which will provide a range of easy-to-use payment methods for all public transport across the country.
Motu Move will enable customers to pay for public transport using contactless debit or credit cards, and digital payment methods such as Apple Pay and Google Pay on mobile phones and smart watches, as well as a prepaid Motu Move card and pre-bought tickets.
For more updates, please find the latest information on the NZTA Waka Kotahi website.
Motu Move in the Horizons Region
Motu Move implementation began in Canterbury in 2024, and will be followed by a region-by-region rollout throughout 2026 and 2027. We have been told Motu Move will be rolled out to the Horizons Region in Quarter 3 of 2027. We will share more information as the rollout gets closer and specific dates are confirmed.
